The name Lazarus - in Hebrew \u201cEliezer\u201d -\xa0 means \u201cGod helps.\u201d Before Abraham had any sons, he had only one heir to his fortune: his steward, Eliezer. In Jewish tradition, Abraham\u2019s steward, Eliezer of Damascus, was an angel. Lazarus, sitting outside the gate of the rich man, was an angel in disguise.
