When we grow up, most of us are taught using the following sequencing: “Go to school, get good grades, go to college, and get a good job.” Like a lot of eventual high- income earners, grade school was easy for me; I got good grades, tested well, was particularly good at math, and loved science. My family would say, “You’ll be an engineer like your grandfather!” My grandfather was laid off and retired early at age 55, not because he wasn’t good at what he did, but because he didn’t want to play politics at work. Seeing this shaped my thinking from an early age as I realized that a high-income “secure” job doesn’t guarantee wealth building, financial independence, or the freedom to live on your own terms.
