Unfortunately, concussions and\xa0traumatic brain injuries, or\xa0TBIs,\xa0are far too common in cycling.\xa0Whether\xa0training\xa0on open roads, racing\xa0at high speeds, or facing\xa0off with rush-hour traffic on your bike commute, cyclists often\xa0place themselves\xa0in vulnerable situations. Head injuries\xa0are becoming increasingly diagnosed among the two-wheeled crowd.\xa0\n\xa0\nWhat\u2019s\xa0more,\xa0there\u2019s\xa0a good deal of misunderstanding about what exactly the terms\xa0concussion and TBI\xa0mean. Are they the same or\xa0very different? How\xa0should you\xa0manage\xa0each condition? What are the\xa0potential long-term repercussions of\xa0concussions, if any?\xa0We\u2019ll\xa0tackle\xa0all of\xa0these questions, and many\xa0more,\xa0in this episode.\xa0\n\xa0\nWe turn to Dr. Steven Broglio, the\xa0director of the University of Michigan Concussion Center and the director of the\xa0NeuroTrauma\xa0Research Laboratory, for guidance on this complex subject. Dr. Broglio has spent much of his adult life\xa0studying the\xa0causes of concussion, the\xa0effects of concussion on the brain, the\xa0short- and long-term\xa0concerns, the best course of management, and the use of helmets, of course.
