Interview with Dr Tamsin Furtado

Published: March 5, 2022, 7:04 a.m.

In today’s podcast we talk to Dr Tamzin Furtado, Post Doctorate Research at Liverpool University. Tamzin has conducted a variety of research studies throughout her career including Managing Equine Obesity, Equine wellbeing on livery yards and her most recent paper on the use of alternative grazing systems in the UK. We discuss: What is the best way to manage obesity in our equines? How we have become conditioned to seeing overweight horses and dogs as the norm. We delve into the reality of being a livery yard manager and what a difficult job this can be. Becky shares a story about a livery yard and has her perspective changed after listening to Tamzin. We also touch on human behaviour change, is there a bright future and how a multi-disciplined approach is needed to affect this change. We look to the future and chat about sustainability and horse care and how in an ever changing climate we need to seek out new ways of manging our land. As always there’s an interruption from an animal, a few tangents and Tamzin also “out – analogies” Becky (for our regular listeners you’ll know this is rare!!) We could have chatted to Tamzin for hours about all the incredible work she has done and her findings but parent duties put a stop to that. We are very much looking forward to having Tamzin with us again to discuss her future projects. If you are enjoying our podcasts, please share, like and subscribe.
