On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act.

Meant to end race discrimination in employment, a ban on sex

discrimination was tacked on at the last minute.  Laughter broke out on

the floor of Congress.  Many thought adding sex was a joke.
