27. From Corporate to Social Impact Entrepreneur, with Tarek Kholoussy

Summary: Today we meet Tarek Kholoussy –  founder of Nomads Giving Back! & Nomads Skillshare! – as he walks us through the different phases of his career.  From working in New York corporate and experiencing lessons to creating two social enterprises run from the tropics of Bali, Tarek reminds us that success is defined differently at different stages in our lives. Notes 2:02 Tarek started his career on the default path by working for one of the ‘Big 6’ accounting firms in New York City4:25 Shortly after moving to New York City, the unimaginable happened and the company he worked for went out of business.7:53Tarek began traveling doing volunteer vacations in China, Zambia, Kenya, Sri Lanka and always felt so alive.9:19 He began to really feel the stark contrast between his two worlds. 9:19 11:55 At a new corporate job he used first 15 days off to go to Zambia with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for orphans.14:22 While in Zimbabwe Tarek tried to explain to his local guide what businessmen do in hospitals in the US.17:35 His wake-up call came when he returned to work and talked about his vacation with his colleagues.21:24 He noticed his values and desires just didn’t fit with the social norms of the environment he was in.28:40 How one serendipitous meeting gave Tarek strength and confidence to go after his dreams.31:40 Tarek built a community bridge between foreigners and locals so nomads can give back to the communities they call home for a while.36:13 Learning from locals and seeing different perspectives on happiness and success is a huge blessing.37:51 Success is about inner peace.39:34 His advice – keep doing more things that support the ways of living that you’re looking for.
