Mobile learning in global health training. What about social justice?
Niall\xa0discusses\xa0emerging\xa0findings\xa0from\xa0the\xa0ESRC/DFID\xadfunded\xa0project\xa0"mCHW:\xa0a\xa0mobile\xa0 learning\xa0intervention\xa0for\xa0community\xa0health\xa0workers\u201d.\xa0 The\xa0talk\xa0will\xa0present\xa0the\xa0background\xa0to\xa0the\xa0project\xa0and\xa0position\xa0his\xa0research\xa0at\xa0the\xa0intersection\xa0of\xa0education,\xa0health,\xa0technology\xa0and\xa0social\xa0justice.\nNiall\xa0will\xa0present\xa0his\xa0joint\xa0research\xa0with\xa0Anne\xa0Geniets\xa0on\xa0the\xa0framing\xa0of\xa0global\xa0health\xa0training\xa0with\xa0technology\xa0from\xa0a\xa0social\xa0justice\xa0perspective\xa0(Winters\xa0&\xa0Geniets,\xa0in\xa0submission).\xa0Critiquing\xa0ICT\xa0for\xa0development,\xa0he\xa0will\xa0set\xa0out\xa0to\xa0show\xa0how\xa0the\xa0design,\xa0development\xa0and\xa0implementation\xa0of\xa0training\xa0projects\xa0are\xa0radically\xa0altered\xa0when\xa0centred\xa0on\xa0a\xa0preferential\xa0option\xa0for the\xa0poor.\xa0He\xa0will then\xa0discuss\xa0the\xa0social\xa0justice\xa0framing\xa0in\xa0the\xa0context\xa0of\xa0the\xa0mCHW\xa0project\u2019s\xa0empirical\xa0work\xa0in\xa0Kenya,\xa0drawing\xa0out\xa0three\xa0key\xa0implications:\xa0(1)\xa0Designing\xa0and\xa0evaluation\xa0applications\xa0for\xa0the\xa0needs\xa0of\xa0the\xa0poor\u037e\xa0(2)\xa0Redefining\xa0the\xa0nature\xa0of\xa0\u2018appropriate\xa0technologies\u2019\xa0and (3)\xa0Implementing\xa0pragmatic\xa0solidarity,\xa0which\xa0means\xa0developing\xa0common\xa0cause\xa0with\xa0those\xa0in\xa0need\xa0in\xa0a\xa0very\xa0practical\xa0and\xa0realistic\xa0manner.
