The Department of Treasury has imposed sanctions on Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, and 10 other individuals for \u201cfor undermining Hong Kong\u2019s autonomy and restricting the freedom of expression or assembly of the citizens of Hong Kong.\u201d
Meanwhile, the Chinese consulate in New York is destroying documents on a large scale. Around noon on August 6, two shredding trucks from a company, \u201cUSA shred\u201d were seen parked in front of the gate of the Chinese Consulate in New York, and videos showed them destroying bins of files for consulate workers.
And in other news, the US ban on TikTok is now going through, and will now include a partial ban on WeChat as well. President Donald Trump signed executive orders to ban US companies from transactions with the parent companies of these two Chinese social media apps, that is Bytedance and Tencent Holdings, respectively, on the grounds of national security concerns.
