Shame and Change

The burning platform is a constant within management when talking about organisational change. It was introduced over 20 years ago, by John Kotter in his book, Leading Change, as an illustration of the need to create a sense of urgency around change. I think the idea misses something major - We talk about burning platforms, but we don’t talk about the fear the fire creates for people.

Shame is powerful and impacts all of us. When we use it to create change we may achieve short term change, but in the long term will end up robbing ourselves.
