What Comes First? The Plot? Or The Characters?

The answer is simple, but it might not be what you think.\\xa0

Plot is what happens when great characters are allowed to walk around and do their thing. When we structure our plot before we have fully developed characters, we end up with a half-formed puzzle and we start carving our characters to be what we need to fill our plot. That's why we have plot armor, flat characters, and that notorious hand of the writer effect.

But how do you know when your characters are ready? How do you know when you've reached that magic moment?
