Plot: Sermon or Subtext?

Remember all those hours in high school trying to identify the theme and subtext of a work of fiction?\\xa0

Yeah, me too. It was terrible, easily one of my least favorite parts of reading in high school and college. Was there anything actually there?

Yes. The subtext is a huge part of drafting a plot, but how do you know what that should be? And are you giving me subtext or a sermon?
