Show Notes

EPISODE 3:

Intro/ Premise of the show:

Hello, I’m budding cozy novelist, Etta Welk, alongside my cheeky mother, Deb. Each week, we’ll explore cozy and traditional mystery books, series, authors, origins, culture, or tropes, but we’ll keep it short and sweet, just like a real cozy.

Remember friends this podcast attempts to be SPOILERLESS! So we keep things broad and light. And we occasionally jab the cozy genre. We obviously really like cozies so don’t take it too seriously.

This is episode 3.

Update

·        Finished plotting the maternity mystery book. There’s an epic battle between pantsers and planners in the writing community. I think when it comes to traditional mysteries… planners have it. It’s too easy to write yourself into a hole or end up having to rewrite a lot during revision.

·        Greg and I took the kids on a long car trip to see family. Not fun for a lot of reasons.

·        Deb? How have you been doing this past week?

There’s a new cozy podcast: The Cozy Sleuth … episode 1 by the lovely LeAnna Shields @inkwielderA sample and review of Karin Kaufman's Death of a Dead Man, book 1 in the Juniper Grove Mysteries.

·        Comments from last few shows:

o  Episode 2… about reading cozies sequentially… Kaylin and Melissa commented on the podcast page (Pippa… google comfy cozy or reach through Etta Welk.) They made great comments about how reading out of order can ruin the long running /longitudinal storyline… but it’s nice to have a “hearty” review in case you’ve had a break from the series for a while.

o  Also got a few emails well wishing the show. Thank you! Please write at ettawelk@gmail.com

o  Back to episode 1 LeAnna’s tweeted us that her first cozy was the Lillian Jackson Braun Books we’ll be discussing today so thank you LeAnna and perfect segue to today’s show.

Format of the show:  Question and Answer session. One of us will pose a weekly question that we both answer.

QUESTION:  What is the scope of “cozy” for this podcast? What is a cozy to you?

·        There’s lots of gray area between genres: cozy, traditional mystery, noir, paranormal, thrillers, etc.

·        Does a cozy need a murder?

·        Does a cozy need a “mystery?”

·        Books mentioned: Cynthia Kuhn’s Academic Mysteries, Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlene Harris, Lillian Jackson Braun, Barbara Allen’s Trash n treasures, Maltese falcon, Sharp objects, Gone girl, Dean Koontz books (misc.)

Timeline-weekly. We’ll give you a peak of the book we’ll use for our discussion. But there’s no need to have read them. Again… no spoilers… just quirky questions and “delightful” conversation.

NEXT WEEK: Trash ‘n’ treasures by Barbara Allan. I read Antiques Chopped in the middle of the series. Definitely going back for more!
