On todays episode, I speak to Ashley Smith, a runner from South Africa who has his eyes on the Olympics. In this episode Ashley speaks about how he is using running for God\u2019s glory.\n\xa0\n\nGrowing up in Mitchells Plain, an area on the Cape Flats infamous for gang violence and drugs, Ashley is familiar with the challenges and hardships many on the Cape Flats face. Refusing to be a product of his environment, Ashley instead focuses his energy on who he is becoming and being a role model who plants the seed of hope.\n\nReflecting on some of the core events that shaped his perspective and gave rise to his resilience, Ashley sees going to a boarding school at 13 years old as being one of these defining moments. Though it was difficult being away from home, it was simply preparing him for what was to come.\nTo quote him \u201cthe challenges and hardships are all part of God\u2019s plan, as he is preparing us for greatness\u201d.\nIt was only when Ashley won his first race in grade 10 that the plan started to become clear. Since then, Ashley\u2019s focus has been on training and improving his running time. This of cause comes with sacrifices, perseverance, and discipline.
