The Voyage of the James Caird

The\xa0voyage of the\xa0James Caird\xa0was a small-boat journey from\xa0Elephant Island\xa0in the\xa0South Shetland Islands\xa0to\xa0South Georgia\xa0in the southern Atlantic Ocean, a distance of 800 miles (1,300\xa0km). Undertaken by Sir\xa0Ernest Shackleton\xa0and five companions, it aimed to obtain rescue for the main body of the\xa0Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition\xa0of 1914\u201317, stranded on Elephant Island after the loss of its ship\xa0Endurance. Polar historians regard the voyage as one of the greatest small-boat journeys ever undertaken.
