The Valdivia Earthquake
The\xa01960 Valdivia earthquake\xa0(Spanish:\xa0Terremoto de Valdivia) or\xa0Great Chilean earthquake\xa0(Gran terremoto de Chile) of 22 May is the\xa0most powerful earthquake\xa0ever recorded. Various studies have placed it at 9.4\u20139.6 on the\xa0moment magnitude scale. It occurred in the afternoon (19:11\xa0GMT, 15:11 local time), and lasted approximately 10 minutes. The resulting\xa0tsunami\xa0affected southern Chile,\xa0Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia and the\xa0Aleutian Islands.
