The USS William D Porter

USS\xa0William D. Porter\xa0(DD-579), a\xa0Fletcher-class\xa0destroyer, was a ship of the\xa0United States Navy\xa0named for Commodore\xa0William D. Porter (1808\u20131864).\xa0William D. Porter\xa0was laid down on 7 May 1942 at\xa0Orange,\xa0Texas,\xa0United States, by the\xa0Consolidated Steel Corporation;\xa0launched\xa0on 27 September 1942, sponsored by Miss Mary Elizabeth Reeder; and\xa0commissioned\xa0on 6 July 1943, Lieutenant Commander Wilfred A. Walter in command.[2]\xa0The ship is predominantly remembered today for the string of extremely unfortunate events that plagued her short three-year career during\xa0World War II.
