The\xa0Narv\xe1ez expedition\xa0was a\xa0Spanish\xa0journey of exploration and\xa0colonization\xa0started in 1527 that intended to establish colonial settlements and garrisons in\xa0Florida.[1]\xa0The expedition was initially led by\xa0P\xe1nfilo de Narv\xe1ez, who died in 1528. Many more people died as the expedition traveled west along the explored\xa0Gulf Coast\xa0of the present-day\xa0United States\xa0and into the\xa0American Southwest. Only four of the expedition's original members survived, reaching Mexico City in 1536. These survivors were the first known non-Native Americans to see the\xa0Mississippi River, and to cross the\xa0Gulf of Mexico\xa0and\xa0Texas.
