The\\xa0Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the\\xa0Corps of Discovery Expedition, was the United States expedition to cross the newly acquired western portion of the country after the\\xa0Louisiana Purchase. The\\xa0Corps of Discovery\\xa0was a select group of\\xa0U.S. Army\\xa0and\\xa0civilian\\xa0volunteers under the command of Captain\\xa0Meriwether Lewis\\xa0and his close friend Second Lieutenant\\xa0William Clark. Clark and 30 members set out from\\xa0Camp Dubois, Illinois, on May 14, 1804, met Lewis and ten other members of the group in\\xa0St. Charles, Missouri, then went up the\\xa0Missouri River. The expedition crossed the\\xa0Continental Divide of the Americas\\xa0near the\\xa0Lemhi Pass, eventually coming to the\\xa0Columbia River, and the\\xa0Pacific Ocean\\xa0in 1805. The return voyage began on March 23, 1806, at\\xa0Fort Clatsop, Oregon, and ended on September 23 of the same year.
