The Jamestown Colony
The\xa0Jamestown[a]\xa0settlement in the\xa0Colony of Virginia\xa0was the first permanent\xa0English settlement\xa0in the Americas. It was located on the northeast bank of the\xa0James (Powhatan) River\xa0about 2.5\xa0mi (4\xa0km) southwest of the center of modern\xa0Williamsburg.[1]\xa0It was established by the\xa0Virginia Company of London\xa0as "James Fort" on May 4, 1607\xa0O.S.\xa0(May 14, 1607\xa0N.S.),[2]\xa0and was considered permanent after a brief abandonment in 1610. It followed several failed attempts, including the\xa0Lost Colony of Roanoke, established in 1585 on\xa0Roanoke Island. Jamestown served as the colonial capital from 1616 until 1699.
