The Great Molasses Flood

The\xa0Great Molasses Flood, also known as the\xa0Boston Molasses Disaster\xa0or the\xa0Great Boston Molasses Flood, occurred on January 15, 1919 in the\xa0North End\xa0neighborhood of\xa0Boston,\xa0Massachusetts. A large\xa0molasses\xa0storage tank burst and a wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35\xa0mph (56\xa0km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150. The event entered local folklore and for decades afterwards residents claimed that on hot summer days the area still smelled of molasses.
