The\\xa0Great Molasses Flood, also known as the\\xa0Boston Molasses Disaster\\xa0or the\\xa0Great Boston Molasses Flood, occurred on January 15, 1919 in the\\xa0North End\\xa0neighborhood of\\xa0Boston,\\xa0Massachusetts. A large\\xa0molasses\\xa0storage tank burst and a wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35\\xa0mph (56\\xa0km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150. The event entered local folklore and for decades afterwards residents claimed that on hot summer days the area still smelled of molasses.
