The Endurance Expedition
The\xa0Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition\xa0(1914\u201317), also known as the\xa0Endurance\xa0Expedition, is considered the last major expedition of the\xa0Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Conceived by\xa0Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition was an attempt to make the first land crossing of the\xa0Antarcticcontinent. After the\xa0conquest\xa0of the\xa0South Pole\xa0by\xa0Roald Amundsen\xa0in 1911, this crossing remained, in Shackleton's words, the "one great main object of Antarctic journeyings".[1]\xa0The expedition failed to accomplish this objective, but became recognised instead as an epic feat of endurance.
