From 1948 to 1975, the\xa0U.S. Army Chemical Corps\xa0conducted\xa0classified\xa0human subject research\xa0at the\xa0Edgewood Arsenal\xa0facility in\xa0Maryland. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of low-dose\xa0chemical warfare\xa0agents on\xa0military personnel\xa0and to test\xa0protective clothing,\xa0pharmaceuticals, and\xa0vaccines. A small portion of these studies were directed at\xa0psychochemical warfare and grouped under the prosaic title of the "Medical Research Volunteer Program" (1956\u20131975). The MRVP was also driven by intelligence requirements and the need for new and more effective interrogation techniques.
