The\\xa0Donner Party, or\\xa0Donner-Reed Party, was a group of\\xa0American pioneersled by\\xa0George Donner\\xa0and\\xa0James F. Reed\\xa0who set out for\\xa0California\\xa0in a\\xa0wagon train\\xa0in May 1846. They were delayed by a series of mishaps and mistakes, and spent the winter of 1846\\u201347 snowbound in the\\xa0Sierra Nevada. Some of the pioneers resorted to\\xa0cannibalism\\xa0to survive.
