The\xa0Cadaver Synod\xa0(also called the\xa0Cadaver Trial;\xa0Latin:\xa0Synodus Horrenda) is the name commonly given to the posthumous ecclesiastical trial of\xa0Pope Formosus, held in the\xa0Basilica of St. John Lateran\xa0in Rome during January 897.[1]\xa0The trial was conducted by\xa0Pope Stephen VI\xa0(sometimes\xa0called Stephen VII), who was the successor to Formosus' successor,\xa0Pope Boniface VI. Stephen accused Formosus of\xa0perjury\xa0and of having acceded to the papacy illegally. At the end of the trial, Formosus was pronounced guilty and his papacy retroactively declared null.
