The\xa0Bone Wars, also known as the\xa0Great Dinosaur Rush,[1]\xa0was a period of intense and ruthlessly competitive\xa0fossil hunting\xa0and discovery during the\xa0Gilded Age\xa0of American history, marked by a heated rivalry between\xa0Edward Drinker Cope\xa0(of the\xa0Academy of Natural Sciences\xa0of\xa0Philadelphia) and\xa0Othniel Charles Marsh\xa0(of the\xa0Peabody Museum of Natural History\xa0at\xa0Yale). Each of the two\xa0paleontologists\xa0used underhanded methods to try to outdo the other in the field, resorting to bribery, theft, and the destruction of bones. Each scientist also sought to ruin his rival's reputation and cut off his funding, using attacks in scientific publications.
