The\xa0Battle of Thermopylae\xa0(/\u03b8\u0259r\u02c8m\u0252p\u026ali\u02d0/\xa0th\u0259r-MOP-i-lee;\xa0Greek:\xa0\u039c\u03ac\u03c7\u03b7 \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u0398\u03b5\u03c1\u03bc\u03bf\u03c0\u03c5\u03bb\u1ff6\u03bd,\xa0M\xe1ch\u0113 t\u014dn Thermopyl\u014dn) was fought in 480 BC between the\xa0Achaemenid Persian Empire\xa0under\xa0Xerxes I\xa0and an alliance of\xa0Greek city-states\xa0led by\xa0Sparta\xa0under\xa0Leonidas I. Lasting over the course of three days, it was one of the most prominent battles of both the\xa0second Persian invasion of Greece\xa0and the wider\xa0Greco-Persian Wars.
