Smedley Butler

Major General\xa0Smedley Darlington Butler\xa0(July 30, 1881\xa0\u2013 June 21, 1940), nicknamed the\xa0Maverick Marine, was a senior\xa0United States Marine Corps\xa0officer. During his 34-year career, he fought in the\xa0Philippine\u2013American War, the\xa0Boxer Rebellion, the\xa0Mexican Revolution, and\xa0World War I. At the time of his death, Butler was the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. By the end of his career, Butler had received sixteen medals, including five for heroism; he is the only Marine to be awarded the\xa0Brevet Medal\xa0as well as two\xa0Medals of Honor, all for separate actions.
