Sherman's March to the Sea\xa0(also known as the\xa0Savannah campaign\xa0or simply\xa0Sherman's March) was a\xa0military campaign\xa0of the\xa0American Civil War\xa0conducted through\xa0Georgia\xa0from November 15 until December 21, 1864, by\xa0William Tecumseh Sherman,\xa0major general\xa0of the\xa0Union Army. The campaign began with Sherman's troops leaving the\xa0captured\xa0city of\xa0Atlanta\xa0on November 15 and ended with the capture of the port of\xa0Savannah\xa0on December 21. His forces followed a "scorched earth" policy, destroying military targets as well as industry, infrastructure, and civilian property, disrupting the\xa0Confederacy's economy and transportation networks. The operation debilitated the Confederacy and helped lead to its eventual surrender. Sherman's decision to operate deep within enemy territory without\xa0supply lines\xa0was unusual for its time, and the campaign is regarded by some historians as an early example of modern warfare or\xa0total war.
