Pankration\xa0(/p\xe6n\u02c8kre\u026ati\u0252n,\xa0-\u02c8kre\u026a\u0283\u0259n/;\xa0Greek:\xa0\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd) was a sporting event introduced into the\xa0Greek\xa0Olympic Games\xa0in 648 BC, which was an empty-hand submission sport with few rules. The athletes used\xa0boxing\xa0and\xa0wrestling\xa0techniques, but also others, such as kicking, holds, joint-locks, and chokes on the ground, making it similar to modern\xa0mixed martial arts.[1]\xa0The term comes from the Greek\xa0\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd\xa0[pa\u014bkr\xe1tion], meaning 'all of power', from\xa0\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd\xa0(pan) 'all' and\xa0\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\xa0(kratos) 'strength, might, power'.
