McCarthyism\xa0is the practice of making accusations of\xa0subversion\xa0or\xa0treason\xa0without proper regard for evidence.[1]\xa0The term refers to U.S. senator\xa0Joseph McCarthy\xa0(R-Wisconsin) and has its origins in the period in the United States known as the Second Red Scare, lasting from the late 1940s through the 1950s.[2]\xa0It was characterized by heightened\xa0political repression\xa0and a\xa0campaign spreading fear\xa0of\xa0communist\xa0influence on American institutions and of\xa0espionage\xa0by\xa0Soviet\xa0agents.[2]\xa0After the mid-1950s, McCarthyism began to decline, mainly due to the gradual loss of public popularity and opposition from the\xa0U.S. Supreme Court\xa0led by Chief Justice\xa0Earl Warren.[3][4]\xa0The\xa0Warren Court\xa0made a series of rulings that helped bring an end to McCarthyism.[5][6][7]
