The\xa0Large Hadron Collider\xa0(LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy\xa0particle collider.[1][2]\xa0It was built by the\xa0European Organization for Nuclear Research\xa0(CERN) between 1998 and 2008 in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and hundreds of universities and laboratories across more than 100 countries.[3]\xa0It lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17\xa0mi) in circumference and as deep as 175 metres (574\xa0ft) beneath the\xa0France\u2013Switzerland border\xa0near\xa0Geneva.
