Julie d\'Aubigny\\xa0(1670/1673\\u20131707), better known as\\xa0Mademoiselle Maupin\\xa0or\\xa0La Maupin, was a 17th-century swordswoman and\\xa0opera\\xa0singer. Her tumultuous career and flamboyant life were the subject of gossip and colourful stories in her own time, and inspired numerous portrayals afterwards.\\xa0Th\\xe9ophile Gautier\\xa0loosely based the title character, Madeleine de Maupin, of his novel\\xa0Mademoiselle de Maupin\\xa0(1835) on her.
