Lafayette Ronald Hubbard\xa0(/\u02c8h\u028cb\u0259rd/\xa0HUB-\u0259rd;\u200a[1]\xa0March 13, 1911 \u2013 January 24, 1986) was an American author of\xa0science fiction\xa0and\xa0fantasy\xa0stories, and the founder of the\xa0Church of Scientology. In 1950, Hubbard authored\xa0Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health\xa0and established a series of organizations to promote\xa0Dianetics. In 1952, Hubbard lost the rights to Dianetics in bankruptcy proceedings, and he subsequently founded Scientology. Thereafter Hubbard oversaw the growth of the Church of Scientology into a worldwide organization.[2][3]\xa0Hubbard was cited by\xa0Smithsonian\xa0magazine as one of the 100 most significant Americans of all time.[4]
