A member of the\xa0First Triumvirate, Caesar led the Roman armies in the\xa0Gallic Wars\xa0before defeating his political rival\xa0Pompey\xa0in\xa0a civil war, and subsequently became\xa0dictator\xa0from 49 BC until\xa0his assassination\xa0in 44 BC. He played a critical role in\xa0the events that led to the demise of\xa0the\xa0Roman Republic\xa0and the rise of the\xa0Roman Empire.
