Jean Borotra and the Battle of Castle Itter
The\xa0battle of Castle Itter\xa0was fought on 5 May 1945, in the\xa0Austrian\xa0village of\xa0Itter\xa0in the\xa0North Tyrol\xa0region of the country, during the last days of the\xa0European Theater of World War II.\xa0Troops of the 23rd Tank Battalion of the\xa012th Armored Division\xa0of the US\xa0XXI Corps\xa0led by Captain\xa0John C. "Jack" Lee, Jr., a number of\xa0Wehrmacht\xa0soldiers led by Major\xa0Josef "Sepp" Gangl, SS-Hauptsturmf\xfchrer\xa0Kurt-Siegfried Schrader, and recently freed French\xa0prisoners of war\xa0defended\xa0Castle Itter\xa0against an attacking force from the\xa017th SS Panzergrenadier Division\xa0until relief from the American\xa0142nd Infantry Regiment\xa0of the\xa036th Division\xa0of XXI Corps arrived.
