History of the Toilet

A\xa0toilet[n 1]\xa0is a piece of hardware used for the collection or disposal of human\xa0urineand\xa0feces. In other words: "Toilets are\xa0sanitation\xa0facilities at the user interface that allow the safe and convenient\xa0urination\xa0and\xa0defecation".[1]\xa0Toilets can be with or without flushing water (flush toilet\xa0or\xa0dry toilet). They can be set up for a sitting posture or for a squatting posture (squat toilet). Flush toilets are usually connected to a\xa0sewer system\xa0in urban areas and to\xa0septic tanks\xa0in less built-up areas. Dry toilets are connected to a pit,\xa0removable container,\xa0composting chamber, or other storage and treatment device. Toilets are commonly made of\xa0ceramic\xa0(porcelain),\xa0concrete,\xa0plastic, or\xa0wood.
