Brigadier General\xa0Francis Marion\xa0(c.\xa01732 \u2013 February 27, 1795), also known as the "Swamp Fox", was an American military officer, planter, and politician who served during the\xa0French and Indian War\xa0and the\xa0Revolutionary War. During the\xa0American Revolution, Marion supported the\xa0Patriot cause\xa0and enlisted in the\xa0Continental Army, fighting against\xa0British\xa0forces in the\xa0Southern theater of the American Revolutionary War\xa0from 1780 to 1781.

Though he never commanded a\xa0field army\xa0or served as a commander in a major engagement, Marion's use of\xa0irregular warfare\xa0against the British has led him to be considered one of the fathers of\xa0guerrilla\xa0and\xa0maneuver warfare, and his tactics form a part of the modern-day military doctrine of the\xa0U.S. Army's\xa075th Ranger Regiment.[1][2]
