Fordlandia

Fordl\xe2ndia is a district and adjacent area of 14,268 square kilometres (5,509\xa0sq\xa0mi) in the city of\xa0Aveiro, in the Brazilian state of\xa0Par\xe1. It is located on the east banks of the\xa0Tapaj\xf3s river\xa0roughly 300 kilometres (190\xa0mi) south of the city of\xa0Santar\xe9m.\xa0It was established by American industrialist\xa0Henry Ford\xa0in the\xa0Amazon Rainforest\xa0in 1928 as a prefabricated industrial town intended to be inhabited by 10,000 people to secure a source of\xa0cultivated rubber\xa0for the automobile manufacturing operations of the\xa0Ford Motor Company\xa0in the\xa0United States. Ford had negotiated a deal with the Brazilian government granting him a concession of 10,000\xa0km2\xa0(3,900\xa0sq\xa0mi) of land on the banks of the\xa0Rio Tapaj\xf3s\xa0near the city of\xa0Santar\xe9m, Brazil, in exchange for a 9% share in the profits generated.[2]\xa0Ford's project failed, and the city was abandoned in 1934.
