Enron Corporation\xa0was an\xa0American\xa0energy,\xa0commodities, and services company based in\xa0Houston,\xa0Texas. It was founded in 1985 as a merger between\xa0Houston Natural Gas\xa0and\xa0InterNorth, both relatively small regional companies. Before its bankruptcy on December 3, 2001, Enron employed approximately 29,000 staff and was a major\xa0electricity,\xa0natural gas, communications and\xa0pulp and paper\xa0company, with claimed revenues of nearly $101\xa0billion during 2000.[1]\xa0Fortune\xa0named Enron "America's Most Innovative Company" for six consecutive years.
