Ching Shih[1]:65\xa0(Chinese:\xa0\u912d\u6c0f; literally: 'widow of Zheng') (born\xa0Shih Yang\xa0(Chinese:\xa0\u77f3\u967d; 1775\u20131844),\xa0a.k.a.\xa0Cheng I Sao\xa0(Chinese:\xa0\u912d\u4e00\u5ac2), was a Chinese\xa0pirate\xa0leader who terrorized the\xa0China Seas\xa0during the\xa0Jiaqing Emperor\xa0period of the\xa0Qing dynasty\xa0in the early 19th-century. She commanded over 300\xa0junks\xa0(traditional Chinese\xa0sailing ships) manned by 20,000 to 40,000 pirates[1]:71\u2014men, women, and even children. She entered into conflict with the major nations, such as the\xa0British Empire, the\xa0Portuguese Empire, and the\xa0Qing dynasty.[2]
