Castration\xa0(also known as\xa0orchiectomy) is any action,\xa0surgical,\xa0chemical, or otherwise, by which an individual loses use of the\xa0testicles: the male\xa0gonad. Surgical castration is bilateral\xa0orchidectomy\xa0(excision of both testes), and\xa0chemical castration\xa0uses\xa0pharmaceutical drugs\xa0to deactivate the testes. Castration causes\xa0sterilization\xa0(preventing the castrated person or animal from\xa0reproducing); it also greatly reduces the production of certain\xa0hormones, such as\xa0testosterone. Surgical castration in animals is often called\xa0neutering.
