The\xa0Burke and Wills expedition\xa0was organised by the\xa0Royal Society of Victoria\xa0in Australia in 1860\u201361. It consisted of 19 men led by\xa0Robert O'Hara Burke\xa0and\xa0William John Wills, with the objective of crossing Australia from\xa0Melbourne\xa0in the south, to the\xa0Gulf of Carpentaria\xa0in the north, a distance of around 3,250 kilometres (approximately 2,000 miles).[1]\xa0At that time most of the inland of Australia had not been explored by non-Indigenous people and was largely unknown to the European settlers.
