The\xa0Bay of Pigs invasion\xa0(Spanish:\xa0invasi\xf3n de bah\xeda de Cochinos; sometimes called\xa0invasi\xf3n de playa Gir\xf3n\xa0or\xa0batalla de Gir\xf3n, after the\xa0Playa Gir\xf3n) was a failed\xa0landing operation\xa0on the southwestern coast of\xa0Cuba\xa0in 1961 by\xa0Cuban exiles\xa0who opposed\xa0Fidel Castro's\xa0Cuban Revolution. Covertly financed and directed by the\xa0U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the\xa0Cold War\xa0and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the\xa0United States, and the\xa0Soviet Union.
