In the last year, communities from Bonavista to Baie Verte have protested the repeated closures of their local emergency rooms. Rural ERs have been plagued by a lack of doctors and nurses, which prevents the hospitals from seeing patients. Now the provincial department of health has signed an 11-million-dollar contract with Teladoc, a U.S.-based virtual care company.
