EXODUS 11

\n

The Plague on the Firstborn

\n

1 Now the\xa0Lord\xa0had said to Moses, \u201cI will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely.\xa02 Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.\u201d\xa0

3 (The\xa0Lord\xa0made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded in Egypt by Pharaoh\u2019s officials and by the people.)

4 So Moses said, \u201cThis is what the\xa0Lord\xa0says: \u2018About midnight I will go throughout Egypt.\xa05 Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well.\xa06 There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt\u2014worse than there has ever been or ever will be again.\xa07 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal.\u2019 Then you will know that the\xa0Lord\xa0makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.\xa0

8 All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, \u2018Go, you and all the people who follow you!\u2019 After that I will leave.\u201d Then Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh. 9 The\xa0Lord\xa0had said to Moses, \u201cPharaoh will refuse to listen to you\u2014so that my wonders may be multiplied in Egypt.\u201d\xa010 Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the\xa0Lord\xa0hardened Pharaoh\u2019s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.
