168. 30+ Years of Murals with Ray Harvey

Published: Aug. 2, 2021, noon

This week’s episode features Missouri based muralist Ray Harvey. I particularly liked this interview with Ray partly because we are only located a few hours apart and I like connecting with other midwestern artists, but also because Ray has this bluntness about him that’s just a breath of fresh air. He delivered some tough love towards the end of this episode and I was here for it! We talked a lot about pride and how artists sometimes lead with their pridefulness instead of just looking at a situation as a business transaction. From working with artists for the past few years I’ve realized that they are either struggling to feel good enough or struggling to be humble enough to learn new things. It’s very rare to find someone who just sees it how it is without emotion and is confident enough to take criticism, learn from it, and not let it get to them. Who cares if someone doesn’t like your art. Ray doesn’t! I think you’re going to really like his point of view on the profession of being an artist. It was unexpected but refreshing to hear how he doesn’t put himself on the artist pedestal that we all are probably guilty of at some point but rather views being a muralist as a job. Let me know what you think of this week’s episode with Ray Harvey.
