Published: Jan. 27, 2017, 4:01 p.m.

Modern physics is dramatically changing our understanding of the world around us. In the first lecture of the 2017 College of Science public lecture series, Dr. Keith Dienes, Professor of Physics, takes us on a tour through some of the most revolutionary new ideas in physics. Describing what is known about fundamental forces of the universe, he sets the conceptual stage for a series of presentations that will cover topics from gravitational waves traversing the astrophysical universe to weird counterintuitive features of the fundamental building blocks of the natural world. He leaves us with the striking recent discovery that all of known matter constitutes only about 5% of all the energy of the universe - forcing the realization that there are huge discoveries still to be made. In this episode: Keith Dienes, Ph.D., Professor in the UA's Department of Physics; Leslie Tolbert, Ph.D., Regents' Professor in the UA's Department of Neuroscience
