The Shaker Village at South Union in Logan County is one of the most western Shaker communities in the United States. The Shakers are a Christian sect which began in the 19th century. They taught communal living, spiritual devotion, and celibacy. Today, only three Shakers are left in a community in Maine. South Union is a museum consisting of nine Shaker buildings. It's all that remains of what were once 225 buildings on a six-thousand acre farm.
