Hopkinsville powwow commemorates Trail of Tears

Last week, a court order revoked the tribal recognition of six Cherokee groups who claim historic Tennessee heritage. This weekend, a Hopkinsville celebration honors the Cherokee who traveled on foot, en masse by the thousands, from their homes in the southeastern U.S., Tennessee included, west of the Mississippi more than 170 years ago. Their forced relocation has come to be known as the "Trail of Tears." The Cherokee sojourned in today's Hopkinsville, where a park honors their passage.
