According to the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, roughly one in five seniors suffers from some kind of psychiatric disorder. Those range from severe depression and Alzheimer's to schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. The U-S Census Bureau reports in 2009, people 65 and over made up 13 percent of Kentucky's population, slightly above the national average. As baby boomers age, that number will grow, as will the field of Geriatric Psychiatry.
